Fernie Winter Writing Workshop

The workshops is modeled on the traditional MFA workshop, sharing work and a critique following with copies handed back to individual writers with comments. This is a safe, supportive and constructive manner of critique. Short pieces will be read during group. Longer pieces must be distributed well before  group and a four page segment read at group.

The schedule will be the first two Wednesdays of every month (except January, since we‘re starting late). This gives us two weeks of critique each month and two weeks at the end to work on things and get ready for the next month.

January 10, 17

February 7, 14

March 6, 13

We can have a concluding potluck with everyone (and spousal units) in early April on a weekend that works for everyone.

Spring Break for SD #5 starts March 18, so we finish in the week before Spring Break.

I tentatively rented the meeting room at the Fernie co-working space, Second Edition, from 7PM to 10PM for all the Wednesdays. The days are penciled in at Second Edition and I told them I’d let them know next Wednesday, January 3. It will cost me between $60 and $80 a session, so I really need to fill the group to eight to make it worth it.

Cost will be $350.

Let me know if you are interested as soon as possible. A couple folks that have been out for a while have expressed interest and we may have one or two completely new people.

MFA-style workshops

The Silverton Writes Workshops brings writers to Silverton, BC for three days of intensive workshops in the writing craft, panel discussions and open readings.

There will be four sections—Fiction/Non-Fiction, Journalism, Poetry and Finding Your Voice. Each section will be limited to eight or nine participants. The program mimics the MFA workshop with each group being led by an experienced writer guiding the critiques as the group makes suggestions to the individual writer’s work as presented. Each workshop is a chance for the writer to discover the effect of their writing on others within their peer group and how to improve and create a stronger impact in a safe and structured environment.

Instructors include John Keeble, Jayme Moye, John Lent, Keith Liggett and others as special guests.

Early Bird registration ends Sept. 22, 2023
